There is a large police presence at the scene

Katie Westwood on Borough Road, Birkenhead: “A neighbour at the scene told me he ‘raced down here’ after hearing a loud bang when he was out in his garden. He said: ‘I thought it was a gun’.

“Traffic is unable to pass via the eastbound carriageway on Borough Road, but there is partial access heading westbound

“The crash happened right outside the Pyramids Shopping Centre. The centre closed today at 5.30pm, around the time the crash occurred.

“A neighbour told me: ‘It’s a bad road there. I’ve seen a few bad crashes over the years.’ There was also a van involved in the crash, which appears to have its passenger door smashed in.”

Statement from Merseyside Police

We can confirm that emergency services are in Birkenhead following a serious RTC today, Tuesday 9 July.

At around 5.25pm, we were called to Salisbury Street to reports of a collision involving multiple vehicles. One woman has been taken to hospital for assessment.

A road closure is in place at Charing Cross and on Borough Road heading towards the tunnel.

We would ask people to avoid the area while we deal with the incident. Thank you for your patience.
