For the first time since the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix, George Russell has taken outright pole position – and will start today’s Canadian GP from P1.
The Mercedes driver set a 1:12.000 in qualifying – the EXACT same time as Max Verstappen for Red Bull, but as Russell set it first, he gets the position.
It is the first time since the famous 1997 European GP that two (and in that case three) drivers have set the exact same pole time and 14th overall in world championship history.
Lando Norris was just 0.021s behind in third with Oscar Piastri fourth and Lewis Hamilton down in seventh after a subdued qualifying.
Ferrari will be pining its hopes on the wet weather that is forecast to hit Montreal to improve on its 11th and 12th places on the grid for Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz after a poor qualifying.
Will the weather play its part and with no clear favourite going into the race, who will emerge victorious at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve?
