Lily Allen and animal charity PETA have continued their war of word online, after the singer revealed how she rehomed her pet dog Mary.
The star was slammed by PETA and sent a toy dog last week, after she admitted that she returned her pet to an animal shelter when it ate her and her children’s passports and visas.
Lily has since clarified her comments, explaining how the passport incident was ‘the last straw’ after a long time spent trying to settle Mary into her family home.
She ended her statement on X by hitting out at PETA, writing: ‘Also thank you to @peta for adding fuel to the fire. Very responsible of you.’

The comment sparked a furious reply from PETA’s official X account, who responded:
‘YOU laughed when speaking about abandoning Mary and ruined this poor dog’s life. She thought she had a loving forever home before you tossed her out, calling her “that f******* dog” who “ruined my life.” Shame on you. You don’t deserve even the toy dog we sent you.’
Lily replied, writing: ‘People laugh when they talk about painful things all the time, it’s quite normal. I’ve clarified that we didn’t abandon her and that she was rehomed with people we knew almost immediately’.
‘Why are you perpetuating lies ? What kind of animal welfare charity tries to shame someone for wanting to improver the welfare of an animal. Your post is dangerous.’
Lily received the stuffed animal and a strongly worded letter from Elisa Allen at the organisation that read: ‘It really is the only animal you should be bringing into your home,’ after she told the original story about Mary on her Miss Me? podcast.
Lily, who lives in New York with her actor husband David Harbour, 49, and children Ethel, 13 and Marnie, 11, made the admission to her friend and fellow co-host Miquita Oliver, complaining that adopting the pooch ‘ruined her life’ after it cost a fortune to replace the documents – and added it prevented her daughters seeing their father for months.
She said: ‘She was a very badly behaved dog and I tried very hard with her but it just didn’t work out and the passports were the straw that broke the camels back so to speak.’
The Not Fair hitmaker added that the effort of replacing her documents turned out to be a ‘logistical nightmare’.

Posting over the weekend, Lily explained: ‘We rescued our puppy Mary from a shelter in NY and we loved her very much, BUT she developed pretty severe separation anxiety and would act out in all manner of ways.’
‘She couldn’t be left alone for more than 10 mins, she had 3 long walks a day 2 by us and 1 with a local dog walker and several other dogs.’

‘We worked with the shelter that we rescued her from and they referred us to a behavioral specialist and a professional trainer, it was a volunteer from the shelter who would come and dog sit her when we were away.
‘And after many months and much deliberation everyone was in agreement that our home wasn’t the best fit for Mary.’
‘The person that she was rehomed with was known to us and that rehoming happened within 24 hours of her being returned.’
‘We couldn’t meet Mary’s needs and her happiness and welfare were central to us making that decision, as difficult as it was.’
