Leaked US documents reveal Israel’s plans for strike on Iran – Times of India

Must read

The United States government has launched an investigation into the unauthorized release of classified documents detailing Israel’s military preparations for a potential strike on Iran.
A US official confirmed the authenticity of the documents to Associated Press, which originated from the US Geospatial Intelligence Agency (GEOINT) and the National Security Agency (NSA).These documents outline Israel’s continued movement of military assets in response to Iran’s recent ballistic missile attack on October 1.
The sensitive documents, labeled “Top Secret,” were reportedly accessible to the “Five Eyes” intelligence alliance, which includes the US, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. However, they were leaked online through the messaging platform Telegram.
US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

Investigation into the leak

The US is now investigating how the documents were leaked, whether through an intentional act by someone within the intelligence community or potentially via hacking. Officials are also assessing whether any other sensitive information may have been compromised.
As part of the investigation, authorities are working to trace access to the documents before they surfaced online.
The leaked documents come at a critical time, as the US urges Israel to capitalize on the elimination of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and to consider a ceasefire in Gaza. Simultaneously, Washington has cautioned Israel against escalating military operations in Lebanon, fearing a broader regional conflict.

What information was leaked?

According to CNN, the documents, dated October 15 and 16, provide detailed insights into Israel’s military activities and preparations for a potential strike against Iran.
The leaked documents are said to originate from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and describe various military exercises conducted by the Israeli Air Force (IAF). According to these reports:

  • Missile activity: The IAF has been observed handling at least 16 Golden Horizon air-launched ballistic missiles (ALBMs) and 40 IS02 (Rocks) ALBMs since October 8. These munitions were reportedly used in prior strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen. Additionally, there are reports of “covert drone activity” and large-scale deployment exercises at key airbases such as Ramat David and Ramon.
  • Military exercises: The documents indicate that the IAF conducted extensive drills involving air-launched ballistic missiles, fighter jets, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and refueling tankers. These exercises are interpreted as preparations for a potential long-range strike against Iranian targets.
  • Aerial refueling: One document suggests that an aerial refueling exercise was conducted on October 16, enhancing Israel’s capabilities for long-range operations. Furthermore, the leaks imply that Israel has been using drones for intelligence gathering across the region, indicating a sophisticated level of military preparedness.
  • Covert operations: Reports also mention covert drone activities and large-scale deployment exercises at various Israeli airbases, including Ramat David and Ramon.

The documents also reveal the US government’s deep concerns about Israel’s military intentions, as well as the potential for further escalation.
