Ahead of the release of his first-ever novel, beloved action star Keanu Reeves has spoken about his feelings toward death, acknowledging that it occupies his mind relentlessly.
Since making his acting debut in the early 1980s, Reeves has cemented his place as one of the most well-known and well-loved names in Hollywood. The Canadian star has proven himself to be a particularly great action movie frontman, starring in the John Wick and The Matrix franchises.
Reeves has also ventured into the world of music, playing bass for grunge band Dogstar who unveiled their third album, Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees, last year. Now, Reeves is set to tackle a new art form with his first novel, The Book of Elsewhere.
Created in collaboration with French author China Miéville, the action novel will exist alongside Reeves’ BRZRKR universe. The franchise encompasses Reeves’ comic book creations and an upcoming film adaptation. Death seems to be a central theme in the new novel, which follows an immortal character called ‘B’ who agrees to assist a group of black ops on the condition that they will help him die.
During a recent conversation with the BBC, Reeves spoke about his own feelings towards death, admitting, “I’m 59, so I’m thinking about death all the time.” The star didn’t see this as a negative thing, but rather as a way to remind himself to appreciate life.
“Hopefully it’s not crippling,” he added, “but hopefully it’s sensitised [us] to an appreciation of the breath we have, and the relationships that we have the potential to have.”
Though he may have briefly turned his attention to writing, Reeves still has a number of acting projects in the works. He has joined the Sonic series in the upcoming third instalment, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which is set to hit cinemas this Christmas.
Reeves is also set to return to the character of John Wick for John Wick Presents: Ballerina next year. This will mark the fifth entry into the series and the first without long-standing director Chad Stahelski at the helm. Stahelski has directed every instalment of the franchise since the first film, John Wick, in 2014.
For Ballerina, Stahelski will give up directorial duties to Len Wiseman, who has previously worked on the Underworld franchise. Ana De Armas also joins the cast for the first time.
