The Alexandria Police Department released the identities of the dead victim and suspect in Saturday’s shooting at the Onelife Fitness (305 Hooffs Run Drive) in Carlyle. APD said that the suspect and the victim were “known to each other.”
According to dispatch, the shooting occurred inside the Onelife Fitness at around 4:15 p.m. on Saturday.
The victim, 29-year-old Joshua Wilcox, of Maryland, was allegedly shot and killed by 30-year-old Charles Hewitt, of Washington, D.C., who “succumbed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” APD said in a release on Monday.
Wilcox did not respond to CPR at the scene and was later declared dead at Inova Alexandria Hospital. Hewitt was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he later died. Two people were also treated at the scene for emotional distress, according to dispatch.
APD spoke with multiple witnesses who said that three-to-four shots were fired, and that they found the suspect’s car, a black Lexus sedan, parked in the parking lot of the gym, according to dispatch.
As previously reported, APD spoke with the manager of the gym to get video footage of the incident, which occurred near the exit, according to the APD scanner. According to those reports, a man in a red Washington Commanders shirt walked into the gym and then shot a man in a white tank top.
The gym is currently closed until further notice, according to a note left on the front door.
“We sincerely apologize but our Alexandria location is temporarily closed until further notice,” the gym said in its note. “We are SO very sorry for this inconvenience and welcome you to use ANY of our Onelife Fitness locations for the time being.”
The investigation is still active, and anyone with information is asked to call APD Detective Whelan at 703-746-6228.
