The Room Next Door made its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto, Canada on Saturday night.
Described as ‘a visually exquisite and intimate adaptation of What Are You Going Through by Sigrid Nunez’ by TIFF, renowned Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar makes his English-language feature debut with the Spanish drama starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore.
The two leading ladies looked amazing when they hit the red carpet, with Moore decked out in a plunging white dress with red floral appliques on the chest and skirt.
Swinton showed off her unique sense of style in silky white blouse tucked into a pair of creme satin trousers.
Written and directed by Almodóvar, the plot deals with the rift between Martha (Swinton), a very imperfect mother and war correspondent, and her resentful daughter, as well as with the former’s relationship with author Ingrid (Moore).

Both Moore and Swinton posed both individually and together on the red carpet ahead of a screening of the film.
At one point, while standing side-by-side, the actresses could be seen holding each other’s hands, in a sweet sign of their friendship.
Moore, 62, ended up rounding out her premiere outfit with sparkly earrings and her auburn hair styled in sleek, straight strands.
Standing at 5ft11in, Swinton looked sensational in her all-white outfit.
For a fun pop of color, she rocked a bright red lip.
Like he has through his career that dates back to 1974, Almodóvar wrote and directed the drama that also stars John Turturro and Alessandro Nivola.
The cast also features the likes of Juan Diego Botto, Melina Matthews, Raúl Arévalo, Victoria Luengo, Esther McGregor, Alex Høgh Andersen, and Alvise Rigo.
A native of Calzada de Calatrava, Spain, Almodóvar’s many directorial credits include the Festival selections Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown (1988), Talk To Her (2002), Bad Education (2004), Volver (2006), Broken Embraces (2009), Julieta (2016), and Pain and Glory (2019).

In 2023, he received the Impact Media Award, which recognizes leadership in creating a union between social impact and cinema, at the TIFF Tribute Awards.
While the ladies were doing their part in promoting the film at the Toronto International Film Festival, Pedro Almodóvar was basking in all the glory of taking home the Golden Lion Award at the 81st Venice International Film Festival at Palazzo del Cinema in Venice, Italy, Variety reports.
Dressed in a black suit with a white dress shirt and no tie, the Spanish legend proudly posed with his trophy, that’s basically the best movie award, for the cameras.
This is actually the filmmaker’s second Golden Lion Award, which follows the honorary one he received in 2019.
The two-time Academy Award winner thanked Moore and Swinton during his largely Spanish-language acceptance speech.
‘This is my first movie in English but the spirit is Spanish,’ Almodóvar, 74, revealed during that passionate speech.

Variety’s Owen Gleiberman described The Room Next Door as ‘a deceptively plainspoken but artful voyage into the river of emotion that accompanies the impulse to end one’s life.’
The film will preview at the 62nd New York Film Festival at the Alice Tully Hall on October 4, as part of the U.S. debut.
The Room Next Door is then scheduled to be released theatrically in Spain on October 18.
