John Lennon Airport closes runway as snow covers Merseyside

Liverpool John Lennon Airport has temporarily closed its runway. The airport posted to its official X/Twitter account this morning, Sunday, January 5 that the runway had been closed due to adverse weather conditions.

A spokesperson for the airport said a further update would be provided at 8.45am today. The full statement from Liverpool John Lennon Airport said: “Due to snow, the runway is temporarily closed but the airport remains open, please contact your airline for flight information. We are working hard to clear the runway and will provide an update at 08:45.”

Heavy snow has fallen over Merseyside overnight, with road closures and travel delays affecting large parts of the region. The Met Office issued an amber warning for snow from late on Saturday with snow continually falling overnight. Roads are covered with a blanket of snow and a number of incidents have already been reported including a number of lorries becoming stuck on Park Road in Dingle.

Merseyrail confirmed to the ECHO yesterday that the first service today would run without passengers to check the rail line. The travel company has already posted a number of updates this morning that its services would face cancellations and alterations.
