John Capodice – actor best known for Ace Ventura and General Hospital roles – passes away at 83

The acting world is in mourning once again, with beloved character actor John Capodice passing away just before the new year.

The actor – best known for roles like abrasive detective Aguado in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Carmine Cerullo on General Hospital – passed on Monday at 83, via Pizzi Funeral Home

He was described in the funeral home listing as a, ‘devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all who had the pleasure to meet him.’

Born in Chicago on Christmas Day in 1941, Capodice served for the US Army in Korea from 1964 to 1966.

He started his acting career in 1978 with his first film role in Rush It alongside Tom Berenger, Jill Eikenberry and John Heard.

Capodice made his TV debut that year as well, with a six-episode guest-starring arc on Ryan’s Hope as Lloyd Lord.

The actor was also prominently featured on two major commercials in the 1980s, one for Polly-O String Cheese and the other for Dimetapp cold medecine.

He played a befuddled pizzeria employee who was asked by some kids to make a pizza with extra cheese but no sauce or crust… a ‘cheese with nuttin’ as his character described.

The Dimetapp ad saw his character at a diner, offering another patron with a cold some herbal tea.

He continued to work regularly throughout the 1980s including movies like Wall Street and See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Family Business, Interal Affairs, Blue Steel, Gremlins 2 and Jacob’s Ladder, The Doors and Honeymoon in Vegas, to name a few.

He also had guest-starring spots on shows like Moonlighting, Murphy Brown, Seinfeld, Blossom, Melrose Place and NYPD Blue.

Not only did he play Aguado on Ace Ventura in 1994, but he was seen as bus driver Bob in Speed, Caruso in The Scout and a mob boss in A Low Down Dirty Shame that year.

He would also have roles in the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day, plus 1998’s Enemy of the State and Ringmaster, plus guest spots on Ellen and many other shows.

Other roles he had into the 21st Century included 10th and Wolf, Detention and a voice role on the Mafia II video game.

His most recent roles include 2019's Lost Angelas and El Coyote, 2020's Frank and Ava, voicing a cab driver in 2023's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and last year's Coversations With a Mobster.

He was also a proud member of the fraternal organization Blauvelt Sons of Italy Rockland Lodge 2176 in Blauvelt, New York.

The actor is survived by his wife Jane, daughters Tessa De Pierro and her husband Joseph and Cassandra Hansen and her husband Dave, grandchildren David, Jake, Frankie and Giuliana and sisters Kathy Magluilo and Patti Lindsay. 

Donations can be made in the actor’s name to the Rockland Homes for Heroes, a charity benefiting New York homeless veterans.
