Comedian Joe Lycett recently welcomed his first child, but he has now revealed things almost took a terrible turn when it came to naming them.

The 36-year-old surprised fans last month when he announced that he and his partner, known only by the faux name ‘Denise’ to keep her identity secret, had welcomed their first child together.

While some believed the Brimingham-born star was joking about his parenthood journey, it has since been confirmed it is very real, but thats not to say an old joke didn’t come back to bite him when it came to welcoming his child.

In his first interview since adding ‘dad’ to his list of accomplishments, the comic recalled the time he changed his name to Hugo Boss, while protesting the high fashion label’s attack on businesses who chose to use ‘boss’ in their advertising copy.

Speaking to the Parenting Hell podcast, he said his old name change resulted in a niggly situation when it came to naming his own child as it could have seen ‘Hugo Boss’ be named on the birth certificate.

‘Talk about things coming back to bite you on the a***,’ Joe said. ‘When we went to register his name, the registrar said to me, “Have you been known by any other names?”

The star went on to say he initially said no but his partner reminded him about the Hugo Boss moment.

‘And she had to go into real granular detail, and she said “You got lucky because if you were Hugo Boss on your passport, we have to put that on his birth certificate the father is Joe Lycett is also known as Hugo Boss”,’ Joe explained.

‘Fortunately, the passport was rejected because my signature as Hugo Boss when I was Hugo Boss for that period was a c*** and balls, so they rejected it.’ He clarified that ‘it was just changed via Deed Poll.’

Elsewhere on the podcast, hosted by Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe, Joe addressed the shock reaction people had to news he had become a dad, explaining that he understands it as ‘it’s unexpected for me to have a baby because lots of people think of me as the gay bloke off the telly.’

The TV personality has never said he is gay. However, he did confirm that he is a part of the LGBTQA+ community and is ‘bisexual’. He previously identified as ‘pansexual’. The term is a reference to people who are attracted to someone no matter whether they are male, female or non-binary.

When announcing the arrival of his firstborn, Joe wrote that he is ‘LOVING being a dad’.

Taking to Instagram, he praised the medical staff at the hospital who delivered their baby son.

‘An appreciation post from me for the extraordinary @bham_womens hospital. My first encounter with them was years ago when they looked after a pal of mine through surgery, and then most recently when they masterfully welcomed a little boy into the world, who happens to be my son,’ he wrote to his 1.4million followers.

‘The care and compassion his mum and he received was exceptional; from the antenatal classes, incredible midwives, consultants, doctors, nurses and the ongoing care in the community. We also loved their baked potatoes.

‘Birmingham is so lucky to have them and I will be forever grateful for everything they’ve done.’
