Joe Lycett says he understands the furore surrounding his shock baby announcement – admitting: ‘It’s unexpected for me to have a baby because lots of people think of me as the gay bloke off the telly.’

The comedian, 36, has given his first interview since revealing he’s become a father for the first time last month with his partner.

Many of the Birmingham-born comic’s followers were sceptical he was telling the truth, given his form for pranks, and he claimed many of his fans thought his Instagram post announcing his baby’s arrival was fake because it looked like he was ‘holding a potato’.

But MailOnline confirmed last week the baby was real and now Joe has spoken in detail about his first weeks of fatherhood, he admitting he spent the first few weeks ‘crying.’

He explained: ‘I’ve done a lot of, I mean less so now, but the first sort of two weeks I did a lot of crying because I did a lot of nostalgia for the future and imagined what he would be like when he was 20 and then worried about him when he’s an old man and I can’t be there for him.’

Speaking on the Parenting Hell podcast, Joe also revealed his newborn son has sparked an unlikely new obsession.

He says: ‘The one thing that has surprised me is that I’ve got really into sport, that wasn’t on the bingo card.

‘I was in the States earlier this year and basketball was on in the bar I was in and the games are all on between midnight and 5am, so when you’re up doing the feed, there’s something live happening.

‘You sort of feel like the world is happening even though you’re up in the middle of the night.

‘So I’ve become a fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers.’

He added: ‘They weren’t doing well but they’re winning the league now since I’ve become a fan. They’re unbeaten in 15 games. I’m mad on the stats, I know all the players’ names.’

Joe said on Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe’s podcast that he is ‘bisexual’, having previously branded himself ‘pansexual’, which means attracted to someone regardless of their gender,

The comedian had his baby son with his female partner, whose identity he is keeping secret, but he’s previously jokingly refers to her as ‘Denise’.

The Late Night With Lycett star expressed how ‘immensely proud’ he is of her, saying she’s taken to motherhood like ‘duck to water’.

He also reveals the pair have become regulars at their local ‘baby cinema’ mornings and have sought parenting advice from YouTube and books.

Joe joked one of the perks of parenting is being able to use his new ‘tumble drier’ as he loves ‘washing’.

However, Joe admitted he did have a scare when registering his baby’s name due to a historic prank in which he changed his name to Hugo Boss, in protest at the fashion brand’s brutal copyright war on small businesses using the word ‘boss’ in their name.

Joe explained: ‘Talk about things coming back to bite you on the a***.

‘When we went to register his name the registrar said to me ‘have you been known by any other names?’

‘I said ‘no’ then I looked over at my partner and she furrowed her brow and I went, ‘oh yeah I was known as a Hugo Boss for a while.’

‘And she had to go into real granular detail and she said ‘you got lucky because if you were Hugo Boss on your passport, we have to put that on his birth certificate the father is Joe Lycett also known as Hugo Boss’.

‘Fortunately the passport was rejected because my signature as Hugo Boss when I was Hugo Boss for that period was a c*** and balls so they rejected it.

‘It was just changed via Deed Poll.’

MailOnline told last week how locals had regularly seen Lycett out and about with his new baby, for confirming the tot was real.

One said: ‘He’s a lovely baby boy and we are all delighted for Joe and his partner. He takes the baby out for walks and even goes with him to his favourite local café. The baby absolutely exists, 100 per cent.’

A woman who runs a local shop said: ‘I have seen the baby and he’s really cute. I understand why people don’t believe Joe because he’s known for his pranks, and we all love him for that.

‘But I see Joe and the baby around quite a lot and this is not one of his famous pranks.’

Another local said: ‘We don’t know much about Joe’s partner but judging by her accent, she’s from Birmingham.

‘They’re seen together quite a lot, but we haven’t spoken to her that much, so it’s all quite mysterious as to who she is and how they met.’
