Pupils from North Lanarkshire schools had a glimpse into careers in the science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) fields.

During a recent SmartStems event at New College Lanarkshire’s Coatbridge Campus, the pupils had the opportunity to attend workshops and experiments, receive expert advice, and complete STEM-related tasks.

The workshops were a partnership between Commsworld, a telecoms communication provider, and Glasgow-based charity SmartSTEMs.

They also listened to speeches from keynote speakers, including Connor McCloskey, service delivery manager with Commsworld, on what it is like to work in tech during the one-day event.

One pupil said: “It was such fun taking part in the activities and I enjoyed hearing from the speakers about the different types of jobs there are, it’s made me think about all the different jobs that I could do in the future.”

Councillor Beth Baudo, vice-convener for Education, Children and Families, said: “It was wonderful to see all the young people who attended this event enjoying not only some fascinating talks but taking part in hugely enjoyable workshops.

“I would like to thank Commsworld and SmartSTEMs for organising this inspirational day, and hope those who took part can see the benefits of studying STEM subjects and pursuing a STEM career.”
