A travel warning has been issued to tourists going to Italy as flights are cancelled at one airport.
The UK Foreign Office has said there could be travel disruption as some flights are being scrapped or re-routed. Authorities have issued new alerts after volcanoes Etna and Stromboli erupted. It means there are now no arrivals or departures scheduled at Catania Airport, in Sicily.
In an update posted on Friday, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said there was an “increase in alert levels for Etna and Stromboli volcanoes in the south of Italy, and suspension of flights into Catania airport”. It warned tourists to follow advice abroad and keep in touch with travel providers, reports BirminghamLive.
The FCDO said: “Due to volcanic activity, local authorities have increased the alert levels for both Etna and Stromboli in the south of Italy. In the event of a volcanic eruption, follow the advice of local authorities.
“See more information on volcanoes. Arrivals and departures into Catania airport are suspended with flights cancelled or re-routed to Palermo or Comiso.
“If you are travelling to or from Catania, check with your travel provider or with Catania airport.“
