An Italian industrialist thought to have fled to Spain after being convicted of murder has been found hiding under his bed at home in Italy, after doubling back in an apparent bid to outfox police.

Giacomo Bozzoli, 39, disappeared while facing a life sentence for murdering his uncle and throwing his body in a factory furnace. He was arrested at his villa near Lake Garda by police who found him hiding in the storage space under his bed clutching €50,000.

“I am innocent, I didn’t kill my uncle,” he told officers as he was led away on Thursday afternoon. Francesco Prete, the investigating magistrate, said Bozzoli had not returned home to give himself up.
