Israeli warplanes carried out several air strikes on a residential complex in the town, Wafa news agency reported.

In addition to at least 73 people killed, scores of others were wounded and missing.

Medics in Gaza said the Israeli air strikes targeted a multi-floor building and damaged a number of nearby houses.

The government media office said that Israeli forces had bombed overcrowded residential areas in Beit Lahiya, adding that women and children were amongst the casualties.
