Israel carried out more deadly airstrikes in Beirut early on Thursday morning after suffering the first serious setback of its war against Hezbollah in Lebanon when guerrilla forces staged a series of ambushes, killing eight of its soldiers.
Multiple explosions were heard in the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital just before midnight local time, before another large blast engulfed a building in a central part of the city.
Six people were killed and seven wounded in the attack on central Beirut’s Bachoura neighbourhood, according to Lebanese officials. Two died in the strike while others died of their injuries shortly afterwards.
