Irish pub stocked up on Guinness amid nationwide shortage

The Shamrock, based in Tacket Street, has told this newspaper that it made sure to stock up on Guinness when it heard that there might be “some limitations” to stock.

Diageo, which owns the Guinness brand, contacted pubs to let them know that there were challenging times ahead, but there wasn’t going to be a complete exhaustion of stock.

Steven Wells, owner of the Shamrock, said: “We contacted our supplier and ordered the equivalent of three weeks’ stock in advance along with our normal weekly order, so we were covered for the Christmas period in case anything went wrong.”

Some pubs around the country have run out of the popular Irish stout, with Mr Wells stating that Guinness forms 42% of all the draught that the Shamrock serves.

Mr Wells added: “It’s a bit tricky moving around the cellar at the moment with all the kegs down there, but we would rather have them in there and be able to serve to customers during December and January than face shortages that others are facing.”

Diageo has had to restrict the supply of the drink amid what it described as “exceptional consumer demand” in pubs across the UK.

Guinness has gained popularity in recent times, with some pointing to so-called ‘Guinnfluencers’ on social media for helping to bolster the popularity of the Irish favourite among women and young people.

Popular celebrities such as Kim Kardashian have been posting pictures of them enjoying the drink.

There is also a trend of ‘splitting the G’ popular with younger adults, helping to fuel the rise in popularity.

Arthur Guinness founded the world-famous Guinness brewery in Dublin back in 1759.
