iOS 18.0.1—Apple Issues New Update Warning To iPhone Users

Must read

Apple has released iOS 18.0.1, fixing two security flaws and a number of bugs in its iOS 18 software. The iOS 18.0.1 update comes just weeks after the release of Apple’s major iPhone upgrade iOS 18. However, its arrival isn’t a huge surprise — it was predicted by an expert days ago.

Apple says iOS 18.0.1 contains “important bug fixes and security updates for your iPhone.”

Among the security patches, iOS 18.0.1 squashes two flaws for users who have already upgraded to the iPhone maker’s newest software.

The first issue in Media Session, which could see audio messages able to capture a few seconds of audio before the microphone is activated, is only for iPhone 16 users, Apple wrote on its support page.

The second vulnerability fixed in iOS 18.0.1 , tracked as CVE-2024-44204, could see your saved passwords read out loud by VoiceOver. Certainly not an ideal situation.

Taking this into account, it is the most notable vulnerability of the two fixed in iOS 18.0.1, says Sean Wright, head of application security at Featurespace. “It is not great to have your password read out aloud,” he says.

However, he concedes, “the risk of this remains low” as “any attacker would have to be in a position to listen.”

Update To iOS 18.0.1 Now

While none of the issues have been exploited in real life attacks yet, Wright still recommends updating to iOS 18.0.1 now.

I agree. It’s worth updating for the bug fixes in iOS 18.0.1 too, which address issues in the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro touchscreen. Other bugs addressed in iOS 18.0.1 include a problem where messages were unexpectedly quitting when replying with a shared Apple Watch Face, and issues with the camera freezing for iPhone 16 users.

It might not seem long since you upgraded to iOS 18, or you might not have updated yet. If you are still on iOS 17.7, you don’t need to do anything— unless you wish to upgrade to the new software now some bugs have been fixed.

If you are on iOS 18 already, you should update your iPhone now. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and update to iOS 18.0.1 now.
