Investigators to return to crash site in Westmeath

The Air Accident Investigation Unit is leading an investigation into the cause of a helicopter crash in Co Westmeath yesterday afternoon which claimed the lives of two men.

The AAIU is due to return to the crash site this morning, which is located on a rural farm near Killucan.

Investigators will continue the recovery process of the wreckage. It will then be transported to an examination facility at Gormanston in Co Meath.

The incident, which happened around 3:30pm yesterday, claimed the lives of two men in their 40s.

Gardaí have confirmed that one of the men is an Irish national, while the second man is believed to be from eastern Europe.

Their bodies were taken to hospital in Mullingar yesterday where post-mortem examinations will be carried out.

Local Parish Priest Fr Stan Deegan said special prayers are being said at masses this morning in the neighbouring parishes of Killucan and Raharney for the men and their families.
