Holidaymakers attempting to secure sunbeds were given a dose of instant karma when they saw their towels drenched by cleaners at a Tenerife hotel. 

The footage was captured by an upset hotel guest, who was staying in a location that is notoriously popular with Brits. 

The clip, posted to TikTok, illustrated the manoeuvres of some guests looking to bag themselves a poolside spot by laying down their towels on vacant sunbeds. 

In a hilarious twist of fate, they were caught by the work of hotel cleaners who, unbothered by the towels, simply removed them to clean the beds and surrounding areas. 

The hotel guests’ towels were then completely soaked after the diligent cleaners left no stone unturned in their work. 

Posting to the social media platform, TikTok user @lshucks asked their followers: ‘Does this serve them right?’

She continued: ‘[The towels] were put on the sunbeds around 8am and the folk most likely won’t be back until after 10am as thats when breakfast finishes’.

Wading in on the debate, other users were quick to chime in on the hot topic of whether or not they viewed it as acceptable to ‘reserve’ sunbeds. 

One user wrote: ‘Maybe just enjoy your holiday instead of worrying about other peoples towels’. 

This did not appear to amuse the original poster, who replied back with more than a hint of sarcasm as they retorted: ‘I am’. 

Another comment simply read ‘good’, with the user glad to hear that the people trying to gain an advantage by putting their towels down early in the day. 

The incident comes following the release of a new study which has revealed that two thirds of Brits suffer anxiety on holiday over securing a sunbed.

Research has shown that 80% of holidaymakers find securing a sunbed stressful while on holiday.

It also showed that 84% of people who do manage to get hold of a sunbed say they experience physical pain due to lying on them.

Further findings from the research revealed that more than half (51%) believe it to be unreasonable for people to ‘reserve’ sunbeds with towels on holiday.

Meanwhile, 1 in 10 admitted they had removed someone else’s ‘reserved’ towels from a sun lounger to replace them with their own.

The research carried out by travel agent On The Beach and bed company Silentnight also revealed that a quarter of Brits (25%) find sunbeds uncomfortable and 14% even wish they could transport their bed poolside.

Zoe Harris, chief customer officer at On The Beach said: ‘We’re fed up with sunbed wars, fed up of that 6am poolside dash and fed up of the sunbed anxiety holidaymakers face.

‘That’s why this summer we’re solving the summer sunbed crisis once and for all, by guaranteeing our customers, not just any sun lounger, but one that will provide the upmost comfort.

‘All you need to worry about now is which cocktail you’ll order to your sunbed first.’
