Danish researchers created a private self-harm network on the social media platform, including fake profiles of people aged 13 and older, in which they shared 85 self-harm-related materials that gradually increased, including blood, razor blades and calls for self-harm.

The aim of the study was to verify Meta’s claim that it has significantly improved its processes for removing malicious content using artificial intelligence. The tech company claims to remove about 99% of malicious content before it is reported.

However, the organization Digital ansvar, which provides appropriate Digital Development, found that during the experiment, which lasted a month, not a single such dangerous image was removed.

According to representatives of Digitalt ansvar, insufficient moderation of the platform indicates that it does not comply with EU legislation.

The Digital Services Act requires large digital services to identify systemic risks, including predicted negative effects on physical and mental well-being.

Content that encourages self-harm is contrary to our policy, and we remove it when we discover it. In the first half of 2024, we posted more than 12 million suicide-related content on Instagram, 99% of which we removed proactively

– said representatives of the company Meta.

However, research by Danish experts has shown that instead of trying to close the network about self-harm, Instagram’s algorithm actively helped spread it. The study found that 13-year-olds communicate with all members of the group about self-harm after they start contacting one of its participants.

The study states that ” this shows that Instagram’s algorithm actively promotes the formation and distribution of self-harm networks.
