Inside HMRC: ‘I got a job without ever speaking to a human’

HM Revenue & Customs is using AI to recruit staff, who do not meet a human being until their first day at the government’s tax collectors.

Although many companies use robots, or AI, for the early stages of hiring new staff, candidates applying to HMRC are speaking with an automated system from beginning to end for some junior roles, including customer service adviser.

Those applying for jobs are asked to send a CV and 1,000-word statement to a civil-service email address. They are then sent a link for a video interview. When they log on to the call a person in a pre-recorded video appears and asks six questions, after each of which the applicant records an answer.
