A new initiative has been launched to make life safer for Torbay’s bus passengers.
Faiths and churches group Torbay United and Stagecoach South West have joined forces to create the Safer Travel Partnership in a ‘heart warming display of community spirit’.
The official launch this week at Churston Ferrers Grammar School marked a pivotal moment in their collective efforts to create a safer and more welcoming environment for all passengers in Torbay.
There is now a shared commitment to address concerns surrounding antisocial behaviour on buses and at bus stops and bus stations and in particular Paignton Bus Station.
As part of this phased project, Torbay United, Churston Ferrers and Stagecoach have come together to champion positive change at Churston Grammar School bus stop.
Since the start of the partnership, Stagecoach has increased the number of buses on the route from Churston to Paignton with the waiting time at seven minutes, down from 10 minutes.
There is a stationary bus at the end of the school day for students at Churston to take the first 90 students which ensures that there is less overcrowding at the stop.
Torbay United has also deployed volunteers to ensure that students have a smooth and safe boarding process at the end of the school day.
The Head Teacher at Churston has completed a survey of all students who use public transport and has provided a realistic picture of demand to support the deployment of buses and volunteers.
Torbay United and Stagecoach have set clear objectives aimed at promoting safer travel and fostering a culture of respect and responsibility among students who use the service.
By working hand in hand, the partnership says it can effectively reduce instances of ASB on public transport and at bus stations, ensuring a more pleasant experience for all who rely on the services.
“We believe in the power of partnership to effect meaningful change,” said the Rev Nathan Kiyaga, Chair of Trustees at Torbay United. “Through the Safer Travel Partnership, we are sending a strong message that together, we can create a safer and more inclusive environment for everyone in Torbay.”
Peter Knight, South West Managing Director of Stagecoach, emphasised the importance of collective action in ensuring passenger safety. “We are delighted to be part of the Safer Travel Partnership initiative; it is important that all students feel safe and welcome when travelling for their education” he said.
“Supporting the local community is at the heart of everything we stand for as a business and look forward to working with our partners to deliver impactful change for Torbay.”
Athena Harper, Team Leader for the Schools Support Network at Torbay United, highlighted the transformative potential of partnership working. “By coming together with Stagecoach and local schools, we are not only addressing immediate concerns but also laying the foundation for a more positive and respectful community. Together, we can inspire lasting change,” she said.
Churston head James Simpson said: “I am delighted that Churston is working in partnership with Torbay United. The Safer Travel Partnership is a testament to what can be achieved when we work together toward a common goal. Active Citizenship is a core Churston value and the culture of care and responsibility shown by the volunteers working on this project is a fantastic example to young people in the bay.”
