Writing on Instagram, Storrie said: “Thank you @uofglasgow for bestowing upon my mum the honorary degree of Doctor of the University of Glasgow.

“This has brought her so much joy in the final beats of her life.

“Janey is so honoured, and I am so immensely proud of her. I am always proud of her.

“Congratulations Doctor Godley. Thank you for all your kindness and support to our family in this very difficult time.”

Storrie also shared an image of Godley, who has written books including the autobiographical Handstands in the Dark, holding the honorary certificate.

The University of Glasgow said: “It is an honour to bestow an honorary doctorate on the incredible Dr Godley. We send all our love and support from UofG to Janey and her family.”

Tributes poured in for the comic on Instagram.

“Some people in life put such a stamp on the world that the ripples are felt far and wide. More than they ever could have imagined. When that is a force for good like Dr Janey, well that is very special indeed,” one user wrote.

“Congratulations Dr Godley so well deserved to a brave defiant inspirational lady you be the brightest star in the sky sending you and you’re family all the love in the world,” another added.

And a third said: “Very well deserved!

“You and Doctor Godley dispensing laughter have been a godsend to many, so even more fitting Janey has been awarded this.”
