A heating expert has revealed why Brits should keep their curtains open rather than closed this winter.
Though closing the curtains does help insulate against the night’s cold, experts argue that leaving them open during the day – even in winter – can significantly contribute to warming the home.
The sun’s rays, even in their weakened winter state, can still provide valuable heat.
Windows effectively act as a greenhouse by absorbing winter sunlight, and, in turn, enhance heating in the home.
While it may seem natural to close the curtains to trap heat indoors, heating professionals suggest a more strategic approach for managing the chill
One heating expert said: ‘When it is below freezing outside, it is generally better to keep the curtains open during the day to allow sunlight to enter the home and help warm the interior.
‘Allowing the sunshine to come in can help offset some of the heat loss through the windows,’ reports the Daily Express.
The advice was echoed by experts at Nottingham-based curtain retailer The Mill Shop.
They noted that, while it may seem counterintuitive, closing curtains during the day can block potential solar heat gain.
Instead, they advise homeowners to keep curtains open during sunny periods, to take advantage of nature’s free heating source.
They said: ‘Closing the curtains would prevent that solar heat gain. Keep curtains open during sunny spells in the daytime to make the most of natural light and heat.
However, once the sun sets, closing curtains at night becomes essential to shield the home from the bitter cold air outside, as curtains provide an extra barrier to heat loss through the glass.
The Mill Shop highlighted the importance of ensuring windows are well-insulated to minimise heat loss.

They added: ‘The optimal approach depends on factors like the home’s insulation, the amount of sunlight, and the severity of the cold temperatures outside.
‘Choose an insulating curtain for best results, or a lined curtain. You could even line existing curtains to increase their insulating properties.’
It comes as experts issue other tips to keep your home warm this winter, including installing thermostats and blocking draughty door frames.
Experts from Money Wellness and Studio also advise homeowners to make sure furniture isn’t blocking radiators, to insulate pipework – and to place tin foil behind your radiators.
