I’m A Celebrity’s Coleen Rooney has opened up about the public reaction to her husband Wayne’s previous scandals.
The Wagatha Christie star, 38, said the nation was gunning for them to split over over his past behaviour that included him admitting drink driving while at the wheel of another woman’s car in 2017.
Coleen also claimed the former Manchester United player, 39, had not been forgiven not been forgiven in the court of public opinion over previous mistakes on tonight’s ITV show.
‘Since the first mistake he’s made, that’s been in the public, people have not forgiven,’ the TV star told fellow campmate Oti Mabuse.
‘When things have happened the public have wanted it to just go oh, split, you know, that’s it, split them up. But the fact is, there’s always been love still there…
‘It has been difficult, but we’re happy now, after all those years… we’re a team.’
After the drink driving incident, which happened while Coleen – who was pregnant with their fourth child – was on holiday, Wayne was ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid community work.
At the time, he issued an apology for his ‘unforgivable lack of judgment’ which he described as ‘completely wrong.’
Coleen spoke about the incident in Disney Plus documentary The Real Wagatha Story saying: ‘It was just sickening. I’ve had that feeling in my stomach a few times and I would never wish anyone to feel that.’
She continued: ‘Wayne just said, “sorry, I’m sorry” and I said “well you can’t be sorry because it’s wrong what you’ve done”, and I just kept saying “you’re stupid, you’re so stupid”. I was just heartbroken.’
In 2010, it was claimed by Helen Wood that Wayne had paid £1,000 for a threesome with her and Jennifer Thompson in a Manchester hotel while Coleen was five months pregnant.
Six years previously Wayne confessed to soliciting sex workers in Liverpool while dating Coleen, saying at the time: ‘I was young and stupid. It was at a time when I was very young and immature and before I had settled down with Coleen.
Addressing his indiscretions in Amazon Prime documentary Rooney, Wayne said: ‘Stuff which has happened in the past with girls for instance, of course, it’s the stuff I regret, so much I feel there’s stuff stuck against my name.’
Prior to Coleen entering the jungle, it was claimed Wayne was ‘worried’ she would drudge up the past because she is ‘very open and honest’.
Ahead of Coleen’s I’m A Celebrity appearance being confirmed, a source told OK Magazine: ‘Wayne is a little worried about what she will say about their marriage, and whether all his past misbehaviour gets brought up.
‘Coleen is very open and honest – if she bonds with someone in there, she will talk about everything she’s been through, including stuff with Wayne and Becky.’
Coleen and Wayne first met when they were 16 and married in 2008. They share four sons, Kai, 15, Klay, 11, Kit, eight, and Cass, six.
I’m A Celebrity continues tomorrow at 9pm on ITV and ITVX.
