Few public figures have fallen from favour as fast as Huw Edwards, the former BBC chief news anchor who guided the nation through momentous events, including the death of Queen Elizabeth II and coronation of King Charles, and was the face of its elections coverage.

Just over a year ago Edwards had secured a significant pay rise, taking his salary to circa £479,000 and cementing his status as the broadcaster’s highest-paid newsreader.

But on Wednesday he left Westminster magistrates’ court with his legacy in tatters, having pleaded guilty to viewing 41 indecent images of children believed to be as young as seven, during a WhatsApp chat with an unnamed man.
