We all know it has been a difficult time for the retail sector in recent years.
Each week, we unfortunately see a number of shops close. From big names to independents, it often feels like no store or chain is safe from financial challenges.
Sadly, it is being reflected in our high streets. On Friday, May 17, we took a stroll in Huddersfield town centre and encountered a staggering amount of vacant shop units.

Walking from the start and end of the pedestrianised section of New Street, from the former Wilko unit to B&M, we saw 10 vacant shop units. Many with signs with ‘to let’ in their windows.
Even more concerning, it appears we will soon lose another popular New Street store. In the windows of household shop Freddie’s, we saw ‘end of lease, closing down’ in big letters.
It will provide yet another dent in the shopping landscape of Huddersfield town centre. As ever we’ll keep you posted with the latest shop openings and closures in Huddersfield.
