A man who slapped a baby in the face in a Barcelona park has been arrested.
Video footage shows the man shouting at family on a path as he mimics hitting the one-year-old girl before swinging again and smacking the girl’s face.
Local media reports he was threatening to kill the tourists, who were sightseeing in the area of Montjuïc.
The man accompanying the child then picked her up and walked away as the woman with them pushes a pram.
A woman filming the incident spoke French to urge the family of tourists to flee.
The little girl could be heard wailing as the attacker walks away up steps lined by bushes.
It took place during a rampage on Montjuïc, overlooking the Poble-Sec neighbourhood of Barcelona, on Sunday, El Caso news website reported.
Police have arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion of assaulting ‘two men and a minor’, one of whom – a 60-year-old man – was hospitalised with face injuries.
Announcing the arrest on X, police in Catalonia said he has ‘numerous police records’.
The 31-year-old suspect has since been admitted to a psychiatric unit in hospital.
He is expected to appear in court by Wednesday, but the man’s condition means he may not be able to make a statement.
The court is waiting for a report on his mental capacity before criminal proceedings can go ahead.
