Hogwarts Legacy 2 Gets Huge Update, With An Even Bigger Caveat

Must read

Hogwarts Legacy 2 is officially in the works, but it may be a while before it sees the light of day. Hogwarts Legacy is one of the biggest games of all-time, as it is in the top 50 best-selling games ever and took the rare number one spot for the best-selling game of the year in 2023. Normally, this would be reserved for Call of Duty or a new Rockstar Games title, but Hogwarts Legacy had an unprecedented level of success. As such, a sequel has been a no-brainer for a while, but details have been scarce.

During an interview with Variety, Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is a major priority for the company and will continue to be a “couple of years down the road,” possibly teasing a release window of 2026 or 2027. The executive refrained from revealing anything else, as the Hogwarts Legacy follow-up is likely still in the very early stages. Developer Avalanche Software hasn’t announced any other games post-Hogwarts Legacy and has confirmed it won’t be doing any expansions, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that the studio is focusing its efforts on a sequel right now.

What Could Hogwarts Legacy 2 Be About?

Hogwarts Legacy 2 Could Explore Any Era of The Wizarding World

As of right now, Hogwarts Legacy 2 is a total mystery. The first game has a conclusive ending that doesn’t concretely set up a sequel. Of course, that doesn’t mean a sequel can’t happen. Hogwarts Legacy was a completely new story made up by the team at Avalanche, and it’s set about a hundred years before Harry Potter’s arrival at the wizarding school. A sequel could take place with a new cast of characters and fill in some gaps with characters like Dumbledore or Voldemort in their younger years or continue to stay distant from the canonical story.

Unlike a franchise like Star Wars, which has hundreds of books, a dozen movies, numerous TV shows, and countless games, the Harry Potter universe is still fairly untapped outside the Boy Who Lived’s story. If Avalanche wanted to be really ambitious, it could attempt to tackle a story centered around Harry, Ron, and Heromine’s kids during their tenure at Hogwarts. Whether or not J. K. Rowling would allow someone else to tackle that is unclear, but it would be an interesting and exciting direction for fans of Harry Potter and Hogwarts Legacy itself.

Ideally,
Hogwarts Legacy 2
will see the light of day before the end of this console generation.

As of right now, there’s no indication of when Hogwarts Legacy 2 will be officially revealed. However, it’s hard to imagine Avalanche will have to spend half a decade making it as it has already designed the world, has a solid gameplay foundation, and more. A sequel’s job would likely be expanding upon the first game rather than completely overhauling it from scratch. Ideally, Hogwarts Legacy 2 will see the light of day before the end of this console generation.
