Hotel giant Hilton and its charitable arm, the Hilton Global Foundation, unveiled the latest progress on its ESG goals with two new reports, the 2023 Hilton Global Foundation Impact Report and the 2023 Hilton Travel with Purpose Report.

“Hilton was founded on the belief that hospitality is a powerful force for good. Hilton and the Hilton Global Foundation are harnessing the transformative power of hospitality by driving meaningful impact in the communities where we live, work, and travel,” said Katherine Lugar, EVP, Corporate Affairs and president, Hilton Global Foundation. “We are proud of the progress we’ve made towards our 2030 Goals and our ongoing commitment to empower communities, protect the planet, and enrich the lives of individuals around the globe.”

Hilton Travel with Purpose ESG Impact

Hilton’s Travel with Purpose 2030 goals are environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals that are designed to reduce natural resource usage and carbon emissions, and also create more opportunities for communities across the globe, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The initiative is led by 469,000 team members across the globe.

From 2008 to 2023, Hilton has achieved progress on many of its ESG goals. Among its managed hotels, the hotel giant has seen a 45.1 percent reduction in carbon emissions intensity. Among its franchised hotels, the company has seen a 25.1 percent reduction.

Its managed hotels have also reduced water use by 26.5 percent. It also surpassed its landfill waste intensity goal for 2030, reducing it by 63.7 percent globally.

Additionally, Hilton has committed to advocating for similar goals, such as the Science Based Targets initiative carbon emissions reduction goals, across the globe. Hilton testified before the United States Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Tourism, Trade, and Export Promotion, participated in the COP28 UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai and in the AHLA Responsible Stay Initiative.

Its social goals have created over 860,000 learning and career growth opportunities in 2023 alone. Hilton associates have committed over 377,000 volunteer hours globally, with over 2.5 million volunteer hours logged since 2017. Additionally, the company’s Team Member Assistance Fund has distributed over $865,000 to a record number of Hilton team members impacted by natural disasters, personal hardship or other crises.

The Hilton Global Foundation works with the hotel giant to achieve its 2030 Travel with Purpose goals, awarding over $4.4 million in grants in 2022 alone, and over $12 million since 2019.

Through grants and charitable giving, the foundation helped local organizations and communities divert over 308,000 pounds of waste from landfills, plant nearly 60,000 trees, restore 22,000 acres of land, distribute and donate hundreds of thousands of meals and provide relief to the communities facing natural disasters, including the recent natural disasters in both Maui and Türkiye.
