Hewlett Packard may seek $4bn from Mike Lynch’s widow

The American tech giant Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is poised to pursue Mike Lynch’s widow for up to $4 billion.

It appears ready to absorb the reputational hit that might come from seeing through a legal case against Angela Bacares, 57. In 2022 a High Court judge ruled that Lynch and his former finance director, Sushovan Hussain, had cooked the books at his software firm Autonomy, which HPE bought in 2011, tricking the Silicon Valley giant into vastly overpaying for the business.

The takeover made Lynch and Bacares wildly wealthy, with a combined net worth of £500 million, according to The Sunday Times Rich List. It also set in motion an epic, decade-long legal fight that led to cases in Britain and the United
