Helldivers 2 Devs Don’t Want To “Dilute” The Game With Crossovers

Must read

Key Takeaways

  • Helldivers 2 COO Johan Pilestedt has explained that he’d love to see crossovers like Alien and Warhammer 40K in the future, but that Arrowhead won’t “dilute” the game to get them.
  • Pilestedt explains that if Helldivers 2 were to get crossovers in the future, he wouldn’t want to create a “not Helldivers” experience with them.
  • Fans have suggested that Warbonds inspired by other IP could be a good workaround, something which Pilestedt himself quite likes the idea of.

Helldivers 2 is a live service title in pretty much name only. While it has microtransactions and quasi-Battle Passes in Warbonds, it doesn’t have seasons, you can earn literally everything in-game, and it has managed to stay away from ridiculous crossovers and collaborations. Almost every live service game these days is going the way of Fortnite, adding characters from outside the IP whether it makes sense or not.

Of course, there’s still time for Arrowhead to add Peter Griffin and Thanos to Helldivers 2 if they really wanted to, but it doesn’t seem that there’s a lot of desire for that kind of thing at the top. Following an interview with VideoGamer about potential crossovers in Helldivers 2, Arrowhead COO Johan Pilestedt clarified via Twitter that Arrowhead would never bombard the game with crossovers as it could “dilute” the game in the process.

Pilestedt reckons that a lot of crossovers could potentially make Helldivers 2 a “not Helldivers” experience, and that Arrowhead would need to do a different take on crossovers in general if it were to dive in properly. That’ll be music to the ears of Helldivers 2 fans that want their game to retain the very specific feel that has been so well established at this point, but Pilestedt does have an idea about how crossovers could happen in the future.

Helldivers 2 Could Get Warbond Crossovers With Other IP

One way in which Helldivers 2 could have as many crossovers as Arrowhead wanted without compromising the integrity of the game would be through Warbonds, an idea that is brought up by a couple of fans in the replies to Pilestedt’s comment. It’s an idea that the COO appears to be pretty down with too, as Pilestedt mentions that the idea of Warbonds inspired by outside franchises like Aliens and Warhammer 40K is “a good point of view”.

He even suggests ideas for certain Warbond items himself, such as an M56A2 Smart Gun from Aliens as a one-off Superstore purchase, or a full Warbond for Starship Troopers, complete with weapons, voices, and armor. While he does stress that “nothing is decided yet” when it comes to crossovers, it’s clear that Pilestedt himself would like to do them, and that Arrowhead is thinking about their potential effect on the game as a whole. So, that should ease the worries of anyone fearful of seeing Snoop Dog fighting Terminids.
