Have your say on new Patcham active travel scheme

Must read

Residents are being given the chance to have their say on proposals for a new bus and active travel scheme in Patcham.

As part of our work to speed up bus journey times, improve reliability and reduce congestion, a shared bus and cycle lane would be built on the southbound side of the A23 between Brangwyn Crescent and Brangwyn Drive.

Funded by the Department for Transport through the council’s Bus Service Improvement Plan, the bus and cycle lane would operate 24 hours a day, replace the current cycle lane and could also be used by taxis and motorcycles.

As this part of the road is very wide, there wouldn’t be any need to reduce the number of traffic lanes.

We’ll also be upgrading a pedestrian island to a signalised pedestrian crossing opposite the southern junction with Old London Road and extending the 30mph speed limit further north to include the new road layout.

We’re now asking for your feedback on the plans which will help inform the final design.

See and comment on the proposals.

The consultation will close on 9 September.

Improving travel across the city

In 2022, the council was awarded £28 million in government funding for the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP). This money has already helped to fund bus services and provide lower fares.

Some of the funding was also allocated to speed up bus journey times.

Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet Member for Transport, Parking and Public Realm said: “We’re determined to make travelling around Brighton & Hove better and more accessible for everyone, whether it’s by car, bike, on foot or public transport.

“A new bus and active travel lane will make bus journey times more reliable and cycling safer. The more we can encourage people to cycle or use public transport, the faster we move towards out Net Zero goals.

“Asking residents, businesses and other stakeholders for their feedback is crucial for making sure we build a transport network that works for everyone. We welcome all views and I look forward to seeing the feedback we get.”
