There are dozens of themed versions of Monopoly — you name a brand or cultural moment, and I’d guess there’s a Monopoly for that. The latest iteration, released Thursday, is based off Monopoly Go!. Yes, Hasbro is making a Monopoly board game based of its mobile game based off its board game. As bizarre as it sounds, it does make sense: Developer Scopely and Hasbro announced in March that Monopoly Go! passed a staggering $2 billion in revenue just 10 months after the game launched.
Scopely CEO Javier Ferreira said in March that more than 8 million people play Monopoly Go! every day of the week; in total, 10 million people play every day. Lots of games could only dream of that sort of engagement. The Monopoly Go! board game is looking to capture a fraction of that interest, bringing people off their phones and onto the game board.
Actually, multiple game boards: Monopoly Go! the board game gives each player their own small Monopoly board — it’s for two to four players total — as they rush to build the first landmark. It’s an iteration on a daily event in Monopoly Go! the mobile game called Landmark Rush. The first to stack four landmark blocks on their board wins. There’s also bank heists and shut downs, other event from the mobile game that are designed to knock down your opponents, tied into gameplay, too. It’s basically a very simplified version of the mobile and regular board game. No juggling cash at the bank here!
Monopoly Go! Board Game is sold at Target and Amazon.
