Harris campaign raised $361m in August, triple the amount of Trump campaign

Kamala Harris raised triple the amount of her opponent in this election, Donald Trump, last month, in what her campaign claimed was the best grassroots fundraising month in presidential history.

With less than 60 days until the 2024 presidential election, the campaign team for Harris, the Democratic party’s nominee for president, following the departure of US president Joe Biden from his re-election race in July, announced on Friday that it raised $361m in the month of August.

Harris, the US vice-president, outpaced the $130m raised by the Trump campaign almost threefold, the Associated Press reported.

Most of the donations to the Trump campaign came in the form of donations less than $200, the Associated Press reported. And the campaign for Harris and her running mate, the Minnesota governor, Tim Walz, said on Friday that August was a record for such grassroots fundraising, after nearly 3 million people contributed, the Hill reported.

The new figures show an increase in fundraising for Harris compared with July, when her campaign raised $310m, and a slight decrease for the efforts of Trump and his running mate, the Ohio senator JD Vance, with their campaign receiving $138.7m in July.

“In just a short time, Vice-President Harris’s candidacy has galvanized a history-making, broad and diverse coalition – with the type of enthusiasm, energy and grit that wins close elections,” Harris’s campaign manager, Julie Chávez Rodríguez, said in a statement on Friday. “As we enter the final stretch of this election, we’re making sure every hard-earned dollar goes to winning over the voters who will decide this election.” í

The Harris campaign also has a large advantage in cash in hand of the end of August, with the Trump campaign reporting $285m across its entities, and the Harris team reporting $404m according to the New York Times.

Harris’s fundraising for August is almost identical to the $364m raised by the Biden campaign during the same month of the 2020 presidential election, the Times added.

Since Biden dropped out and Harris launched her campaign, her ticket has raised more than $615m, according to her campaign.

The figures released by both campaigns for August do not represent the precise amounts, as the full Federal Elections Commission financial filings for August will be publicly filed later this month, the AP said.

The new fundraising numbers come as several new polls show Harris narrowly leading Trump nationwide.
