If you were hoping that GTA 6 would run at 60 frames per second when it comes out, there could be bad news on the way.
Sony revealed its mid-generation console update this week, the PS5 Pro, with the release date set for November 7 and a much higher price tag than a lot of fans expected, causing plenty of criticism on social media.
A day later it announced that pre-orders will go live at the end of this month, while confirming that the console will cost even more if you want a vertical stand or a disc drive.
As for technical specifications, Sony hasn’t officially stated much yet, but an expert is sure that the highly anticipated GTA 6 won’t run at 60 frames per second, even on the upgraded console.
Why won’t GTA 6 run at 60fps on PS5 Pro?
In an interview with IGN, Richard Leadbetter, the technology editor at Digital Foundry, was asked if it was possible GTA 6 could reach the heights of 60fps, to which he said:
‘No. Grand Theft Auto games have always run complex simulations that push the CPU hard, which is why every GTA game has initially launched on their target platforms at 30fps (or lower!).
‘The PS5 Pro uses the same CPU as the PS5 and it would be extremely challenging to hit 60fps if the base PS5 version is targeting 30fps. This isn’t a GPU problem, it’s a CPU problem.’
Leadbetter also said he thinks there is ‘good evidence’ that the GTA 6 trailer from last December was running on the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X.
Even though the PS5 Pro enhances some existing games, such as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Hogwarts Legacy, with its upgraded tech, some will still only reach 30fps, according to The Verge’s Tom Warren.
As for what the PS5 Pro does better than its predecessor, Sony highlighted an upgraded graphics component, more powerful ray tracing, and AI-driven upscaling to produce sharper images in the announcement video this week.
PS5 Pro tech specs:
Sony hasn’t announced all the technical details of the PS5 Pro yet but while the CPU details below are only a rumour they’re believed to be correct.
- CPU: 8x Zen 2 Cores at 3.5GHz (variable frequency)
- GPU: unknown
- RAM: unknown
- Internal storage: 2TB SSD
- Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi 7
- Expandable storage: NVMe SSD slot
- External storage: external SSD/HDD support via USB
- Optical drive: optional 4K UHD Blu-ray Drive
Frame rate determines the smoothness of how a game plays and below 30fps can lead to very choppy visuals and leaden controls. Above 60fps is generally not noticeable though, even though a small number of games offer frame rates of 120fps or above.
Considering how visually impressive the GTA 6 trailer is, and that the PlayStation 5 and its CPU – the same as in the PS5 Pro – will be five years old by the time Rockstar’s action adventure game comes out, it’s difficult to argue against Leadbetter’s opinion that it will still run at 30fps.
