GTA 6 On PC Apparently Confirmed After New GTA Online Update

Must read

Grand Theft Auto 6 may have just been confirmed for PC by an anticheat update to GTA Online. The update celebrated the 11-year anniversary of GTA 5 and was implemented to reduce the widespread cheating in the game. As an unintended consequence, the update may also have confirmed that GTA 6 will be coming to PC, at least eventually.

The accidental leak was spotted by a Reddit user following a GTA Online update that mandated BattlEye. A screenshot of the directory shows “Americas” listed as one of the games.

Project Americas” was the alleged codename for GTA 6 and its appearance on this PC update appears to lend credence to the possibility that developer Rockstar Games is preparing for a PC release of the upcoming GTA game. GTA 5 notably took over a year to come to PC after its initial console release on Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2013.

GTA 6 On PC At Launch Would Be First For The Franchise

It Would Break A Decades-Long Porting Tradition

The first Grand Theft Auto game ever published was created for the PC, while the second released on PC first and then ported to the PlayStation the following year. Since then, every new GTA game has neglected its PC origins and come out exclusively for consoles on launch.

Each entry has taken longer and longer to be ported to PC over the 25 years since GTA 2s release. GTA 3 came to PC eight months after it was released on consoles, GTA 4 took seven months, and GTA 5 took over a year. If the next game in the franchise follows the same pattern, then fans wouldn’t expect GTA 6 to arrive on PC until at least 2027 or 2028.

The appearance of “Americas” on the new anti-cheat GTA Online update may imply that the wait for a PC port will actually be shorter. It’s also likely that when it does release, GTA 6 and its presumed online components will be partnered with BattlEye to provide anti-cheat protection and hopefully address the issue before it even has a chance to start.

Rumors about the upcoming GTA title have been circulating since before the game was even officially announced, including rumors about GTA 6 possibly being delayed. Unfortunately, not all news about the upcoming game has been positive: GTA 6 is already getting some negative publicity over a payment dispute with its soundtrack artists. Rockstar Games still has some time to make things right with fans, as the game isn’t scheduled to release for another year. GTA 6 has no release date yet, but it seems that a PC version may already be in the works.
