Greece travel warning for UK tourists and Crete is the ‘worst’ place for it

A fresh travel warning has been issued for Brit holidaymakers and tourists after four died in Greece. The tragic deaths in the European Union holiday hotspot include the sad passing of BBC, ITV and Channel 4 star Dr Michael Mosley, the medical expert and TV healthcare professional, who died in Symi.

The heatwave in the country has seen temperatures reach the mid-forties. After Mosley, 67, was found dead of natural causes on the island of Symi, three more tourists have died – and all three in Crete , a popular UK holiday island.

On June 5, a 67-year-old Dutchman died while crossing the Mylon gorge on the island. And a 70-year-old French tourist collapsed and died on a beach in Sitia before an 80-year-old man was found dead near an archaeological site near Malia.

Dimitris Kalatzis, who heads the Samos rescue team for a missing Dutch tourist, said rescue missions were often made more difficult because tourists, frequently unaware of the risks, “veered off track” to see sites and then got lost. “We saw a couple [of foreigners] walking a trail in 41C without hats,” he said. “It defies logic.”

He confirmed a 67-year-old Dutch tourist collapsed and died of a heart attack while crossing the Mylon gorge in Rethymno, Crete as temperatures reached 40 degrees. A 70-year-old French tourist collapsed and died while walking on a deserted beach – between Kouremenos and Zakros in Sitia, Crete.

Dr Mosley was found on the beach of Agia Marina. Albert Calibet, a 59-year-old from California, vanished on Tuesday afternoon shortly after he embarked on a four-hour hike on the Greek island of Amorgos. Calibet — a seasoned hiker — “is well-known on the island. He has been visiting for several years,” said Calliope Despotidi the deputy mayor of Amorgos.

“He had completed the Aegiali-Katapola hike several times in the past,” she said. “It is strange because he is not a person who walked the route for the first time. He knows Amorgos better than me,” Despotidi said.
