Great British Bake Off star John breaks down in tears and walks out after bread disaster as he becomes the latest contestant to leave the competition

Must read

Emotions were running high in the tent once again on Tuesday evening as the bakers tackled bread for week three.

And in what is shaping up to be one of the most dramatic series’ of Great British Bake Off it all got too much for John who had to leave the tent to gather his emotions.

The NHS Directorate support manager, 37, broke down in tears as his bagels took a turn for the worse during cooking and sadly meant he lost his place in the competition.

The bakers were tasked with making a bread cornucopia filled with doughy goods, however John confessed his bagels weren’t floating to the surface of the boiling water, as they had done in practice.

While John at first appeared to jokily tell the cameras the bagels were going wrong, he then found himself choking back tears as he was comforted by Alison Hammond

As the host gave John a hug, he sniffed: ‘I don’t want to cry over bagels,’ before he asked: ‘Can I just have a minute?’

Heading out of the tent to gather his thoughts and emotions, the rest of the bakers looked on concerned as the pressure of the competition continued to mount.

However sadly the doughy delight proved to be his downfall as he presented the dissapointedly flat pancake-esque bagels.

He jokily told Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith: ‘I wouldn’t even bother, use it as a frisbee,’ as Paul agreed: ‘You can’t eat that,’ and Prue offered a sympathetic: ‘Shame about the bagels’.

As Dylan was awarded star baker for his incredible week in the tent, it was the end of the road for John.

Talking to cameras while crying once again he added: ‘It’s fine it was expected. Just a bad week this week.

‘The tears are tears of pride’

Elsewhere in the episode things got off to a dramatic start as host Noel Fielding took a savage swipe at none other than Gordon Ramsay

As the host gave John a hug, he sniffed: ‘I don’t want to cry over bagels,’ before he asked: ‘Can I just have a minute?’

The comedian, 50, compared the renowned British chef, 57, to an omelette after claiming ‘all chefs are ugly’.

As bread week kicked off with the signature challenge, contestant Dylan confessed to Noel his ambition to be a chef.

Trying to dissuade him from the career in the kitchen, Noel replied: ‘You don’t want to be a chef, chefs are ugly. You are too attractive to be a chef.’

He then joked: ‘Have you seen Gordon Ramsay, he looks like an omelette with eyes’.

While Gordon is known for his hot temper in the kitchen, Noel then added: ‘Don’t put that in he’ll beat me up.’

As Jeff returned to the tent after suffering illness during cake week – sadly his condition failed to improve and he was forced to call time on the competition.

Alison asked: ‘Are you alright Jeff?’ before he replied: ‘I’ve had enough. I’m done.’

‘You tried man, you tried,’ Alison said as she comforted the disappointed baker.

The tent was thrown into further chaos when midwife Illiyin collapsed as the showstopper challenge finished and had to be put in the recovery position by medics.

Time up was declared before the bakers were set to show their showstopper, but she was heard saying: ‘I just feel a bit dizzy.’

As she began to swoon while the showstoppers were being judged, Paul yelled: ‘What the hell is going on?’

‘Are you all right?’ Prue gasped, as Illiyin collapsed to the floor, with medics rushing over.

And just minutes later, the bakers were stunned after hearing a huge thud, turning to find retail temp Dylan had fallen off his stool and onto the floor.

Scared he had also fainted, the host checked he was ok before Dylan confirmed he had fallen off his chair trying to pick up his water bottle.
