Graeme Souness holds Rangers gripe with Gareth Southgate as England ‘surprise’

Must read

Graeme Souness insists that England boss Gareth Southgate has NOT picked his best goalkeeper for Euro 2024 after snubbing Jack Butland.

The Rangers No. 1 was the standout performer at Ibrox last season after kickstarting his career north of the border after a free transfer from Crystal Palace last summer – with many expected the Light Blues’ resolve to keep the 31-year-old at Ibrox this summer with bids set to arrive from the English Premier League. But his form in Scotland wasn’t enough for Southgate – with Three Lions boss going with Jordan Pickford, Sam Johnstone and Aaron Ramsdale as his Euro 2024 picks.

But bemused Ibrox icon Souness insists that Southgate has made a major misstep before the tournament in Germany. England go into the tournament as favourites to claim the championship, and writing for Mail Online, Souness said: “I believe this is the strongest England squad I have seen going into a top tournament.

“Yes, there are a few frailties in defence. Particularly if Luke Shaw falls over, but generally it’s a fantastic squad and a common sense selection.

“Gareth has also been very loyal to Jordan Pickford, which I can understand, but, for me, there is another goalkeeper who should be going to the tournament. I’ve watched Jack Butland several times playing for Rangers this season and he is the best English goalkeeper around. I’m surprised he hasn’t earned a place.”
