Gordon to Liverpool transfer talk gathers pace and ‘growing concern’ over future

Must read

Anthony Gordon is reportedly still distracted by potentially signing for Liverpool this summer.

Gordon, 23, is in the England camp at the European Championships but has barely played. The Newcastle United winger has made just one appearance as an 89th-minute substitute in the final group-stage match against Slovenia.

In the aftermath of that game, the ECHO reported that the Reds rejected a chance to sign the boyhood Liverpool fan after being approached by the North East club. The following day, England squeaked past Slovakia after extra time in the last 16, and their quarter-final on Sunday went all the way to penalties.

Across those 240 minutes, Gordon did not feature at all, and the Daily Star now reports that there is ‘growing concern’ around the camp about the player being distracted by the speculation and having ‘taken his eye off the ball a little bit’. That would perhaps explain why Gordon has played by far the fewest minutes of all 21 players to feature.

Luke Shaw has even managed to play more than the winger despite not being fit enough to play in the first four matches. Aside from Adam Wharton, Lewis Dunk and Joe Gomez, plus the backup goalkeepers Aaron Ramsdale and Dean Henderson, all of whom have not played, Gordon ranks dead last for time on the pitch.

His closest comparison is Ollie Watkins, who at least got 20 minutes in a cameo off the bench against Denmark. The Aston Villa striker was also the subject of a rumoured move to Liverpool earlier this summer.
