Google has launched a new TV streaming device to replace the long-standing Chromecast dongle.
The Google TV Streamer is a 4K set-top-box that Google says will improve on much of Chromecast’s features, including doubling as a smart home hub, a fresh design and utilizing AI to recommend content.
As is the case with Chromecast, users can add their subscriptions to Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV and others. The Streamer will also have access to over 800 channels, according to Google.
The AI features are powered by Gemini. This will allow users to view summaries and reviews of TV shows as they select something to watch. Gemini will also curate content for users, across all subscriptions, based on their viewing habits, and let users build watchlists with AI recommendations.
Google is clearly making a play for more visible space in your media room because the Steamer is significantly bigger than the Chromecast. Its predecessor would dangle behind the TV, but the new device is supposed to sit on the TV stand and be part of the streaming furniture.
Part of that size increase is down to improved specifications, such as 4GB of memory, 32GB of storage, HDMI 2.1, a 22% faster processor and an ethernet port.
The Streamer will also bring some smart home features to TVs. The device has connectivity support for Matter standard and a Thread border router, which should mean a simpler way to connect smart home devices from different companies. Google says this will result in faster response times and enhanced reliability.
One of the biggest improvements on the Chromecast is the new Google Home panel. Owners of video doorbells will now be able to view the camera feed on their TV, adjust lights, or change the house temperature. These are a long-requested features from Google Home users.
The Home panel will also come with some improved Nest Aware features. Later this year Gemini will be able to recognise specific scenes from smart home video feeds. The company gives examples of using the camera activity search in the Google Home app to ask “did the kids leave their bikes in the driveway?” Or, “did my dog go near the cookies?” These features will come to Nest Aware subscribers in the Public Preview later this year.
Everything happens through a redesigned voice remote that has a new slimline profile and textured back for improved grip. There is a programmable button to open a user’s preferred app and a chime option if it gets lost, which is activated by a button on the back of the Streamer, or asking another Assistant-enabled device to find it.
The Google Streamer will be available to buy from the Google store on September 24th for $99.99.
