Google launches “TV Streamer,” a $100 Chromecast replacement

In a nutshell: Google has introduced its latest set-top box for the living room. The new Google TV Streamer looks to up the ante by leveraging artificial intelligence and baking smart home capabilities into a single, entertainment-first device.

The search giant said Google TV Streamer replaces Chromecast with Google TV, taking its best features and putting them into the new 4K streamer. Google TV Streamer features a processor that’s 22 percent faster than what’s found in Chromecast. You also get twice as much memory (4 GB, which still seems light for a multi-purpose streamer in 2024), and 32 GB of local storage.

Google’s latest supports up to 4K 60 FPS resolution as well as Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG video formats. On the audio side, you get support for Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby Atmos. AI smarts, meanwhile, are used to curate content suggestions across all of your subscriptions.

Wi-FI 802.11ac comes standard, as does Bluetooth 5.1, a wired Ethernet jack, an HDMI 2.1 Type A port and a USB-C power / data port. While the device does support HDMI 2.1, you’ll need to supply your own cable.

Google also redesigned the voice remote based on user feedback, making it easier to hold thanks to improved ergonomics like a textured back and an optimized button layout. A new customizable button, meanwhile, makes it easy to launch your favorite app, switch inputs, or open the Google Home panel with a single action.

The streamer also works with the Matter smart home platform and serves as a Thread border router for enhanced functionality. The aforementioned Google Home panel acts as a hub for all your connected smart home devices, and it’s easy to see how having them accessible on your TV could boost response times to things like camera alerts.

The Google TV Streamer is available to pre-order now directly from the Google Store. It measures 6.4 inches (L) X 3.0 inches (W) X 1.0 inches (H), weighs 5.7 ounces, and is offered in your choice of white or dark gray color schemes. Pricing is set at $99.99, with launch slated for September 24.
