Gisèle Pelicot’s children have condemned the “low” sentences handed out to some of the men who raped her after her former husband was convicted of inviting dozens to abuse her while she was unconscious.
Anger erupted at the conclusion on Thursday of France’s unprecedented mass rape trial, in which Pelicot, a 72-year-old grandmother, had been praised for her courage for waiving her right to anonymity and insisting that the evidence should be heard in open court.
Dominique Pelicot, also 72, who was found guilty of repeatedly raping his wife and inviting other men to do so, received the maximum 20-year sentence after being found guilty of aggravated rape and other crimes. He was “dazed” by the sentence, according his lawyer.
