Girls put off athletics by fear of becoming too muscular, says Olympic hopeful

“I would say I’ve probably been quite fortunate,” Hodgkinson said.

“I think my only struggle maybe recently would be… one of those general things that athletes, girls have, just looking really muscular.”

She added that as an athlete she accepted that her body may not be exactly how she would want it to look, but that it would help her on the track.

“Some days I’ll be really lean,” she said. “I hate looking really lean because I just think that I look ill.”

Hodgkinson said that she believed other young female athletes struggled with the issue of feeling uncomfortable at being muscular, but this was not a bad thing.

“I think muscular is definitely something that girls struggle with in sport, whether it be from outside people saying things online or in people around you and just dealing with that. It’s a nice thing, it’s not a bad thing and it’s what helps you to do really great things on the track.

“So I think it’s just common with that. There’s something like a percentage dropout rate of girls between 17 and above that drop out because of their body image which is quite sad.”
