New Stalker 2 patch notes have arrived just in time for the holiday, as GSC delivers quite literally thousands of fixes and improvements for its apocalypse survival FPS. Leading this major patch are the first round of updates for the A-Life system, the beating heart that determines the behavior of NPCs and even The Zone itself. Out now, Stalker update 1.1 should dramatically reduce those frustrations that can pull you out of the otherwise highly immersive shooter, and ensure you have a better experience overall.
Our Stalker 2 review has a lot of good things to say, with Paul praising how rewarding it can feel for those who are able to adapt to its distinct pacing. The most notable issues, however, have been technical troubles and bugs that can impede the fun of one of 2024’s best FPS games. While GSC was quick to roll out plenty of early improvements, work on the A-Life system, that underpinning engine that helps the world of Stalker 2 truly feel alive, has taken a bit longer. Now, however, the first improvements have arrived.
A-Life NPCs should now appear roaming The Zone more frequently, and you’ll see them from a greater distance, meaning encounters should happen more often. They’ll now be more motivated to pursue their goals when you’re not near them, although if you make an effort to head in their direction you’re likely to encounter them again. They’re better at successfully finding their way to their goals, and will be more inclined to expand their territory control or take the fight to enemy factions and mutants. You’ll also see a more diverse makeup of factions exploring the Zone – and should no longer find them spawning in behind your back.
Those improvements should help sell GSC’s vision of a living, breathing world, where events progress whether you’re there to see them or not, and a useful ally might fall foul of an enemy strike while you’re out completing other Stalker 2 missions. But they’re just the beginning of a patch featuring “over 1,800 fixes and adjustments.” Among them are a wealth of improvements to enemy and NPC AI, including fixes to pathing and use of cover. Those comical moments where a large mutant tries to hide behind a slender tree are now a thing of the past – funny, yes, but a little immersion-breaking.
Mission rewards have been increased in many places, the Gauss rifle has been given a damage boost, and exploits allowing players to obtain infinite money or coupons are no more. There’s a whole stretch of fixes for issues blocking progress in mainline story content and side quests alike. Helmets should now correctly have protection against Psi and Rads. Combat barks can be heard from further away. The in-game tutorials have been improved to make for a better first-time user experience. A frustrating save glitch that could occur after crashes is no more.
That’s just the briefest glimpse of a rather colossal overhaul, but the theme across the board is very much focused upon ensuring that every little gripe, frustration, or unusual behavior that might yank you out of Stalker 2’s immersive world is eliminated.
Stalker 2 patch 1.1 is out now. It’s certainly a big one in every way – our download clocked in at a whopping 117.8 GB. “We understand that the size of the patch is huge and the process of downloading will take some time,” GSC writes. “We would like to thank you for your understanding, and we will work on this aspect as well.” If you’re struggling to make space, you might want to consider uninstalling and reinstalling the full game as a possible solution.
