Gen Z have already come for skinny jeans, ankle boots and cardigans, and now they’re cancelling one of the most iconic millennial wardrobe essentials many never thought would go out of style
Turns out, your wardrobe can very quickly reveal your age.
Gen Z, who were born between 1997 and 2012, are now reaching adulthood and are setting the agenda for what’s cool, leaving millennials horrified at what doesn’t make the cut. They have already cancelled skinny jeans quicker than it takes to wrestle into a pair, while long cardigans and high-waist items have also been given the boot.
But just like most fashion trends, it is already being predicted that uncomfortable trousers will make their way back into the zeitgeist. Soon, the baggy cargo pants and mom jeans everyone rushed out to buy will also become time-stamped and ridiculed by someone 10 years younger than you.
And now, Gen Z model and social media star Sarah Coome, who has amassed more than 218,000 followers thanks to her fashion and beauty insights, has predicted the death of another millennial classic.
“The reign of the crop tops lasted for so long like they have been a staple throughout the years,” she said. “But I feel like this whole like classy sort of sophisticated, old-money, look is really taking over and crop tops don’t really fit into that category.”
Old money refers to a way of dressing that makes looks like you belong to a long line of wealthy elites that yacht in Greece every summer and ski in the Alps every winter. Think preppy Ralph Lauren shirts, cashmere jumpers, and tennis skirts. It’s all-natural tones and colours, and relatively modest – inspired by literary classics like The Talented Mr Ripley.
“Even just like shirts that end more at like the hip line – like the mid-riff showing a little bit but not the whole stomach is just like, it’s so much more in fashion right now,” Sarah added. “I just need to know like what are we replacing the crop tops with? Are we focusing more on accessories or are we wearing more dresses?”

Thousands of viewers flocked to the comments section to debate the existence of the popular garment, with many glad it’s going out of fashion. “I’m so over everything being a crop top!” one user fumed. “Sometimes I just want a normal T-shirt.”
Another agreed, commenting: “Good. I’m tired of finding cute shirts but they’re crop tops.” While a third added: “I can’t ever find a shirt that’s NOT crop top I just want a normal shirt!!”
However, many Millennials put up a fight, with many saying they will continue to wear crop tops no matter what. “I don’t like old money style. I love crop tops they make me feel so confident and hot,” one user said. Another wrote: “As a short torso girl, I will not stop wearing crop tops lol.” While a third added: “I need to wear crop tops in the summer, [it’s] not negotiable.”
