Gavin And Stacey cast recreate iconic photo 17 years on in first look image as major new plotlines are revealed for the Christmas Day special – so will we ever find out what happened on THAT fishing trip?

The cast of Gavin And Stacey have recreated their iconic photo 17 years on, as anticipation builds for the last ever episode of the hugely popular BBC sitcom.

Set to air on Christmas Day, viewers will tune in to watch what happened after Nessa (Ruth Jones), 58, proposed to Smithy (James Corden), 46, five years ago.

In a first look image released on Thursday, Smithy and Nessa joined Gavin (Mathew Horne), 46, and Stacey (Joanna Page), 47, for a group shot.

As 17 years have passed since the original photo was taken, Smithy is no longer baby-faced and sports a beard.

Ruth character’s Nessa, meanwhile, is still a huge fan of leather, while Gavin and Stacey are in their 17th year of marriage.

Alongside the accompanying photo, major new plotlines were released with the BBC teasing viewers may finally find out what happened on Uncle Bryn’s fishing trip and that Gavin and Stacey’s sex life has hit a dry spell.

The long-running joke on the series sees Rob Brydon’s character Uncle Bryn appear shifty when asked about the notorious fishing trip with his nephew Jason (Rob Wilfort) which they both refuse to speak about.

Teasing what’s in store, the BBC said: ‘It’s five years since we left Nessa down on one knee declaring her love for Smithy and asking him to marry her. And a lot has happened since then.

‘In Barry, Bryn’s packing the Picasso in readiness for a trip to Essex; Stacey and Gavin are looking for new ways to spice up their seventeen year marriage and Gwen is behaving most strangely.

‘Nessa’s started a new business venture and Neil the Baby’s about to begin an apprenticeship with his dad.

‘Over in Billericay Pam is stressing out at the prospect of playing hostess, not helped by a newly retired Mick practicing his golf swings in the living room and there have been more ups and downs in Pete and Dawn’s relationship.

‘Join us on the journey to Barry and Billericay as we catch up with the Shipmans and the Wests for the very last time and maybe find out what exactly did happen on that fishing trip.’

Filming recently wrapped up, with the cast bidding a final farewell to the show.

Production for the finale first began on September 2, and since then the cast have been pictured in a string of locations, including the famous Barry Island in Wales, which takes centre stage in the iconic comedy.

One of the main plot points that has emerged appears to be Nessa’s wedding, which could provide an answer to the cliffhanger that ended the 2019 special.

Stars Ruth and James filmed scenes for a wedding last month.

However, the cast themselves have yet to confirm if Smithy and Nessa will indeed get their happy ending.

The cast recently announced they had finished filming scenes on the famous Trinity Street, which acts as the backdrop for the homes of both Stacey and Gavin, her mother Gwen and uncle Bryn.

‘You haven’t seen anything because we’ve been indoors, which shows you’re true committed fans of the show and we hope that you won’t be disappointed on Christmas Day, when all will be revealed,’ Ruth told fans.

‘This is our farewell now to Barry and to Trinity Street, so you won’t be seeing us here anymore but we’ve had a wonderful 17 years, it’s been fantastic.’
