KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- Gary Kirsten red flags Pakistan’s issues during World Cup
- Babar Azam and Co. eliminated in group stage
- Kirsten submits confidential report to PCB chief
After completing his IPL duties with Gujarat Titans, Kirsten decided to take up the role of Pakistan’s coach, albeit he only had about a little over one week to get his players ready for the T20 World Cup.
Pakistan began the T20 World Cup with a shocking Super Over defeat to the USA, followed by another narrow loss to India. The USA’s match against Ireland was washed out and Babar Azam’s men were eliminated from the tournament in the group stage itself.
Apart from their on-field woes, there were plenty of rumours regarding dressing room unrest, and Harris Rauf even had a public fight with a fan. All the aforementioned issues have been duly noted by Gary Kirsten and he has reportedly mentioned it all in his comprehensive report to the Pakistan Cricket Board.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi will evaluate the report which includes important areas related to the team’s disappointing performances during the T20 World Cup. Local media reports claim that Kirsten has highlighted key issues such as the fitness levels of players, disciplinary issues and game awareness which will all be evaluated by Naqvi.
The PCB Chairman is expected to go through Kirsten’s accounts and after having a word with his fellow officials, and then he will decide the road ahead for the Pakistan team.
Babar Azam and his teammates have been criticised heavily by former cricketers given their displays were clearly below-par and thus they failed to make any impact. It is up to the players and the selectors, as well as the PCB officials, to ponder about the future of the Pakistan cricket team.
